Nezávislý snímek Smrt čeká všude, pojednávající o týmu amerických bombových specialistů sloužících v Iráku, byl jmenován Asociací filmových kritiků Los Angeles filmem roku 2009.

Kathryn Bigelowová za snímek Smrt čeká všude, který byl uveden na český trh v listopadu tohoto roku pouze na DVD, získala od asociace také ocenění za nejlepší režii. Herec Jeff Bridges byl oceněn za ztvárnění country zpěváka ve snímku Crazy Heart a belgická herečka Yolande Moreauová za titulní roli francouzské malířky ve filmu Seraphine. Rakouský veterán Christoph Waltz získal ocenění za vedlejší mužský herecký výkon za roli vypočítavého nacisty s odzbrojujícím úsměvem ve filmu Quentina Tarantina Inglourious Basterds. Herečka Mo'Nique byla oceněna za ztvárnění dcery týrané svojí matkou a zneužívané otcem v dramatu Precious.

Ceny losangeleských kritiků nejsou považovány za rozhodující při udělování cen Oscara, i když ocenění herci za nejlepší mužský herecký výkon posléze cenu Oscara v minulých čtyřech letech získali. Schindlerův seznam v roce 1993 byl však posledním filmem, který byl současně oceněn kritiky a získal také Oscara.
